The character of Italian class structure derives much of its texture from this agricultural base, which was affected at the turn of the century by a gradual rural exodus and later by the abandonment of the most unstable part of the agricultural world, the braccianti, or day laborers. The workshop artisan tradition owes much to this vast agricultural world that transformed in a short period of time into the urban world of work. In Italy there is an extensive stratum of artisans and small family-owned firms and an unusual profusion of small factories and cooperatives, the large-scale plants FIAT, Pirelli, and Michelin being the exception.
