Example text

Such texts raise ‘interpretive difficulties’ (B. Kachru, 1986b: 165–6) because readers from outside the context do not have straightforward access to the assumptions that make the allusions work effectively as parts of the overall text. Such use of the language extends the cultural load of English words to Asian and African myths, folklore, and traditions. It universalizes English, and to that extent ‘de-Englishizes’ it. Multilingual people’s grammars are best thought of in terms of ‘verbal repertoires’; they use ‘a formally and functionally determined range of languages … as part of their competence for linguistic interaction’.

English may be expected to be used by well-educated (perhaps Western-educated) academics. Is it also used by top-level business people, management, employees, and professionals such as doctors, nurses, engineers? Do shopkeepers, taxi-drivers, and bluecollar workers use it? A cline of proficiency may be associated with societal penetration, so that people with less contact with users of ‘fuller’ varieties of English may speak a basilectal form, with gradations up the economic and social scales to an acrolect.

The annotated bibliography lists resource materials that are helpful in exploring facets of WEs, and the list of Web sites facilitates an examination of further material. The lists of select literary works in various Englishes identify additional resources for building an awareness of the creative potential of regional varieties. This book is designed to be useful to anyone interested in English studies. It is perhaps of most relevance to advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students of English and English-language education, including those who are undergoing preparation for teaching English as an additional language.
